Dragon Age Origins question: what does 'hardening' a character mean?

I know HOW to harden a character in the game, but I don't really know what it MEANS to do so.

What does it mean? What happens to the character after you 'harden' their personality?

Does it mean that their approval rating is HIGH, from then on out or something?Dragon Age Origins question: what does 'hardening' a character mean?
It basically means that they will become less selfless in a way and more-so think more about what they think is best for them. Example: after hardening Alistair, he will be more optimistic about becoming king of Ferelden.Dragon Age Origins question: what does 'hardening' a character mean?
It means they won't be so sensitive about things. Before hardening, they will have things that they will absolutely not like. Like Leliana doesn't like you being mean to people. Alistair doesn't like you being amoral. But if you harden them, they won't mind quite so much as they used to. Basically, they learn that the world is not a charity and some things just must be a certain way.
