How do you Harden a character in the game Dragon Age origins?

I've seen the word harden in forums and in videos on youtube and how people say it..but i don't understand what it means to harden someone like alistair or how exactly you do it

Patricia is right about Alistair, but you can also harden Leiliana. When you do her personal quest and visit Marjoline, she will talk to you afterward about it. In a quest with Alistair you help him find his sister. After you have found her and you're talking with Alistair there's is a option to say something like "Everyone is looking out for themselves. You should learn that.". If you choose that option, Alistair will be hardened, which will give you the option to marry him later if you're a female. There'll be some other changes too.



As far as i know Alistair is the only character you can harden.
